In 2025, the Jewish Roots in Győr Public Benefit Foundation initiated the launch of a BA course on the theme of “Jewishness – Inclusion – Exclusion” for students majoring in social pedagogy and sociology at the Apáczai Csere János Faculty of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences at Széchenyi István University in Győr.

At the same time, it launched a project consisting of several classroom sessions and a student contest on the topic of “Exclusion – from anti-Semitism to bullying in schools, examples of creating enemies” in eight secondary schools in Győr and the surrounding area. Teams from six secondary schools took part in the contest activities.
External experts mandated
Guest lecturers invited by the foundation – Dr. Richárd Papp, associate professor (ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences), and Dr. Anikó Sükösd, assistant professor (KRE Faculty of Economics, Health Sciences and Social Sciences) – explored and interpreted the issues and manifestations of exclusion, including anti-Semitism, in interactive lectures and informal discussions at both the university and secondary schools.
Research and contest
In the final phase of the course, university students used their own micro-research to find answers to the question of what significance Holocaust remembrance has today for representatives of different generations in their families, neighbourhoods, and other communities. At the closing event of the course, the students presented their reports based on the interviews they had conducted. These reports reveal that, with a few exceptions, the interviewees are often ignorant about the Holocaust, or their “knowledge” is limited to negative stereotypes about Jews. Unfortunately, some of the statements were explicitly anti-Semitic. In any case, these micro-studies are useful because they reinforce our understanding of the subject.

In the high school program, teams of three students from each school prepared written submissions, which they had the opportunity to present during a study trip to Szeged, South Hungary. The trip to Szeged provided an opportunity to learn about the sights of this famous city and the history and present of its Jewish community.
The winners of the high school competition were:
- First place went to Csorna’s Soproni SZC Hunyadi János Technical College for its work on “From abuse to school bullying.”
- Second place went to Győr’s SZC Bercsényi Miklós Transport and Sports Technical College for its entry on “Proposals for combating anti-Semitism and bullying in schools.”
- Third place went to Pannonhalma Benedictine High School for its essay analyzing the topic “We are not revolutionaries – Pannonhalma liferescuers in World War II.”
- The jury’s special prize was awarded to the Richter János Music Vocational School in Győr for their compilation on Éva Quittner, a Holocaust survivor and Australian painter from Győr.
