Tünde Csendes’ doctoral dissertation
Tünde Csendes, outstanding researcher of Jewish history in Győr, successfully presented her dissertation entitled “The History of an Elite Group of Jewish Landowners in Győr (1850–1945)” at the Jewish Theological Seminary – University of Jewish Studies (OR-ZSE).
The committee, chaired by György Gábor, OR-ZSE department chair and university professor, highly praised the dissertation, which addresses a topic that has remained largely unexplored to date, awarding it the summa cum laude distinction with an exceptionally high score.
One of the main conclusions of the research: the outstanding economic and modernization achievements of the Jewish landowner dynasties in Győr and the surrounding area, as well as their efforts at cultural adaptation, were not accompanied by general social acceptance; the physical and symbolic traces of these families’ lives as well as their achievements were erased from both local and broader social memory.
