Student contest

The presentation of the works, the Jury’s decision and the Award Ceremony took place in the Győr Synagogue on 19 April 2024.

Memories of Jews in Győr and its neighbourhood

Their fate – our history

The Jewish Roots in Győr Public Charity Foundation launched the competition in 2022, in which 11 teams of three students each from 8 secondary schools in Győr and its surroundings submitted their written research report and related artwork.

The contest ended on 19 April 2024 with a presentation day at the Győr Synagogue, where the teams gave a presentation on the results of their research.

The first prize was awarded to the team from the Kazinczy Ferenc High School and College in Győr, whose members, Zsombor Harai, Áron Takács and Anna Boldizsár, with the support of Ildikó Pintér, history teacher, presented the life of Jewish students who once attended the predecessor of Kazinczy, the Count Albert Apponyi Girls’ High School. They also studied the life and work of Dr Ignác Kovács, a former Kazinczy teacher of Jewish origin, and made a documentary film about him as a work of art.

The jury gave second place to Lili Flinger, Anna Hordós and Dorottya Kispál from the Czuczor Gergely Benedictine High School in Győr, supported by Tamás Cséfalvay, a history teacher. Their main topic was the fate of the Jewish students of the Benedictine High School during the time of the Holocaust. Their further research focused on the life of the martyred Bishop Vilmos Apor. They created paintings for their work of art.

The third place students of the Pannonhalma Benedictine Secondary School, Levente Deák, Máté Drozdik and Tibor Barnabás Sepsi, under the professional guidance of Tamás Németh, history teacher, dealt with the fate of the Jewish secondary school students murdered in Győr in 1944. A special presentation was made of the press coverage of the Jewish community in Győr between 1935 and 1945. Their creative work is a three-dimensional design of a Holocaust memorial.

In line with the call for entries, a prize was also awarded to the best technical school team. This prize was won by the team of the SZC Pattantyús-Ábrahám Géza Technikum in Győr, consisting of Levente Bekő, Bálint Burkus and Levente Csíkász, supported by history teacher Melinda Kazóné Kardos. Their research covered the history of the Graboplast factory, founded by the Jewish Grab family, and the life and work of Imre Pattantyús-Ábrahám, a Jewish lifesaver from Győr honoured by the title ‘Righteous Among the Nations’. A film was made on the history of the Győr Synagogue.
